Patient Information

The American Board of Bariatric Medicine provides voluntary certification for physicians who would like to focus their medical practice on treating obese patients. When a physician completes our certification process, they become a Diplomate of the American Board of Bariatric Medicine.

The majority of our Diplomates are also boarded in Family Practice or Internal Medicine. Our Diplomates chose to focus their education and medical practice on the field of obesity. However, a physician can practice bariatric medicine without being certified in it.

If you are looking for a physician to assist you with long-term medical management for obesity, please use our physician database.

It is the belief of the American Board of Bariatric Medicine that, at a minimum, any physician practicing the medical management of obesity should provide individualized treatment and information in the following areas.

  • Diet and Nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Behavioral Modification
  • Medical Evaluation - on Every Visit.
  • Co-Morbid Conditions
  • Pharmacotherapy

The administrative office does not have doctors on staff and cannot provide specific information regarding patient care. These questions must be discussed with a physician. We also cannot make specific physician referrals. Please refer to our Diplomate database to find an ABBM certified physician in your area.

ABBM receives numerous inquiries about Bariatric surgery . ABBM recognizes the possible value of Bariatric surgery, but only after all other treatment options have been exhausted.
